tonight I've learned that

  1. the mechs in this game are ridiculously stompy and full of alarm klaxons
  2. you cannot play the game without the mech simulator controller
  3. if your mech explodes and you don't eject in time it erases your fucking save file

this game is so fucking intense holy shit

in reply to @atomicthumbs's post:

theres an xbox 360 sequel that takes full analog advantage of the kinect to have you be inside the mech, alongside having an entire squad for you to direct and chatter with inside the machine. sadly the kinect being the kinect it didnt work so well, but i always have to wonder what a VR version of it would look like with other players replacing the crewmates

Steel Battalion is one of those rare mutants that you just can't imagine anyone making today, a game that had to be bought for $200 using its own custom designed controller only, for sim enthusiasts who want to have to manually downshift their mech in order to climb hills better. It's one of those laser-focused things that honestly makes me happy just knowing it got to exist at all.
