  • webring model, but like, with some sort of facilitation/dead link handling/making sure the chain's intact instead of hoping that static html block everyone copied stays good and leaving it 100% up to each webzone nerdlord on their own to determine who's "next" and "previous"
  • irc model, where you have One service and multiple "independent" servers sharing and distributing the load with multi way links/agreements (instead of separate island fiefdoms and ad hoc relays between them) and yet still having the ability for some of those bits to remain locally instead of always distributing globally (within that network of servers)
  • that gum i like

EDIT: also by irc model i don't mean chat. I DON'T MEAN CHAT. especially not discord. holy fuck discord is 100% not irc beyond "has a chat with usernames and channels and servers you can join and leave"

in reply to @bobskunk's post:

IRCv3 has a lot of promise but it's been in the works for like 20 years

Chat history without a bouncer? Better account/auth handling? Avatars?

Just needs easy inline link previews and image sending and it's great.

Basic PMs on that but mainly for group chats would be perfect.

And then you just use whatever AIM/MSN equivalent pops up for more serious one on one comms (XMPP has the same problems as mastodon and it's dead/100% been killed by google)

I long for the end of "apps which have to appeal to everybody and do everything"

They gotta be separate.
