we can picture how Picard would justify it to himself afterwards, yeah
Sisko had that entire episode in which he convinced himself to be okay with a false-flag murder of a diplomat, so he'd be fine
we're less sure about Kirk. Kirk is the one who convinced gangsters to ACTUALLY become legitimate businessmen that one time. Kirk just feels less constrained by the laws of human nature than any subsequent captain.
BONES: Do we really have the right to end an innocent being's life like that? Who are we to play god like that, Jim?
KIRK: hmm...
SPOCK: He used to be two guys.
KIRK: oh right!
ah, see, we were imagining it being a Spock+Bones Tuvix, hence providing maximum motivation for Kirk to do it
I like how Lower Decks looked at this problem and came up with the solution, "What if we threw like four more guys in there? Now that it's an upsetting amalgamation of like half the bridge crew, we obviously can't leave them like that."
if you think about it a bit more that's even more horrifying
but it was sufficiently confusing to make the comical angle play well, which is impressive
The real question is does Picard face a Tuvix situation before or after the Thomas Riker incident? because a Thomas Riker is the solution to a Tuvix and I’m sure Geordi and O’Brien could figure out how to do one of those on purpose.
The one captain who might not is Burnham if only because Discovery is the most willing to completely upend its status quo. Either way we would for sure get to see her have a good cry about it in her quarters afterward. That’s not a value judgement, it’s simply accurate.
I'm glad you brought up the "oops, more Rikers" thing, because that seems like the most obvious fix without murdering an innocent.
