keyed up my radio at maximum power and smoke started coming out the vent. my wire had slipped off my antenna's matching transformer terminal. but it turns out to be fine as this inductor isn't necessary anyway and this is a common problem in early units, before they revised the autotuner to remove the IF trap entirely
the repair for "this component tried to catch on fire when subject to high SWR" is "replace it with a small wire." after the change, the radio's high SWR protection will kick in properly before any other part of it roasts itself, or (as tends to happen to the choke's partner capacitor) explodes
the radio probably still works in this condition. it was still transmitting when I noticed smoke curling out the vent and whacked the power button
