in a different world where FUD spread by organic/anti-GMO style lobbying groups and non-profits didn't put an end to commercial food irradiation in the US in the late 90s/early 00s, you can look for the Radura symbol to know your ground beef is gonna be good for 3 weeks and edible for 6 weeks, instead of giving you food poisoning if you don't eat it within a week

imagine how much less food waste there would be. imagine how many fewer tons-of-CO2-equivalent of greenhouse gases would be pumped into the atmosphere just on raising fewer cows to be slaughtered, processed, purchased, stored too long, thrown in the garbage, and left to rot

With even higher doses, and absolutely airtight packaging, it should even be possible to make fresh food last indefinitely at room temp, right? At least from a bacteriological perspective. Oxygen-free packaging eliminates oxidation, and then... what else even remains to make food spoil?
