No, I think you've got it right. But also I think Drake is performing at surface level without much to say. The things that Family Matters touches on are primarily things that Kendrick touched on (and seemingly dealt with) years ago.
But also you can't really look at this as a "who won this round?!?!?" thing. The way people traditionally try to look at rap beef kinda doesn't apply here. Kendrick is in that ass. He seems to have people leaking info to him. And also he's accusing Drake of being a pedophile. It's become about a lot more than "haha, that's a bar right there."
I'm torn on it because it's been fun in the way that a lot of rap beef is, but also I'm increasingly of the mind that there's no way back from this that doesn't involve violence. Like what's Drake going to do, put out another track where he says that Kendrick perhaps cheated on his wife years ago? His level of detail on Kendrick already felt like it was lacking. At some point doesn't he just get pushed to a limit of some kind and start plotting actual violence? Do the police ever start digging into the allegations? No idea how real they are, but you're already seeing screenshots of comments from women saying "yes, I'm in Toronto and Drake has been known to have ties to a trafficking ring, thank you for exposing him" and stuff like that. It's more than just "haha, I think I can rap better than you!"
This is the sort of thing that makes me feel my age a bit, because 25 years ago I wouldn't have given a fuck about this thing turning violent, I just would've felt bad after the fact. But now I'm sitting here, feeling a bit queasy, thinking "man, I hope this doesn't get somebody killed. Well, I mean, if the allegations are true then maybe Drake should just kill himself. Fuck. Ugh."
Nice to see a beat from Mustard, though! I wish it still had the signature "hey, hey, hey" shit that he was putting in everything for awhile. ALSO I JUST FUCKING LOVE THAT WEST COAST SHIT.
I feel bad for feeling giddy about aspects of it. But I still feel giddy about aspects of it.
