i love screening movies for people in Bigscreen VR. (ever try Bigscreen? lil gif of it above. it's an awesome, free virtual movie theater that lets you stream from your PC! the streaming video quality is fantastic, and the VR embodiment is great for conversing.)

i want to explore holding more involved screenings with more people than just the one (lovely) long-distance friend i already do this with

i'm not sure of the best/most painless way to keep interested people informed of upcoming screening events. i would also need to send all confirmed attendees a room join code when the event's beginning.

if it was just a personal social circle i could go as primitive as group texts or something, but i want this to be open to other like-minded/interested people i don't yet know personally, too.

creating (yet another) Discord feels too involved for how simple this project would be? and also Discord sucks

it's possible i'm overthinking but i'm wondering if there is a like, just a simple, low-friction tool that is designed to let people sign up to receive occasional alerts about an event. like an RSS feed but something random everyday people would use, lmao.

thought i'd see if anyone has any suggestions.

I mean…go old school, a Google calendar? I think that’s a standard, maybe CalDAV? Yeah that looks right. Then people can just subscribe to the calendar in their calendar app and it’ll pop up events. The next step down from that is a mailing list that sends out calendar invites via that standard?

maybe. wouldn't that require everyone letting me know a gmail account? i feel like some people would feel less comfortable sharing that with a rando (me) than they would, say, a Discord username.

re: email
i actually tried a mailing list for another get-people-together project 5+ years ago and it was shocking how few viable "listserv" type services were around anymore.

Yeah that’s part of what I meant about CalDAV. Any CalDAV server can do the thing. and if you don’t like any of those maybe run your own?

Oh wait I don’t think subscribing to a CalDAV leaks an email address? Huh

I think it might leak something, looking at it. But it definitely doesn’t have to be gmail. If it would help I’d be happy to help test the calendar so you can see what it shows you. (Don’t have VR yet tho lol)

And that sucks but makes sense.
