rewatched this once-popular anime that i rented back in the day. fun to revisit, but it didn't really hold up, and it was surprising how much of the boring stuff i'd forgotten. or that its plot just doesn't ultimately go anywhere interesting. some charming sequences though, good art, and the soundtrack still has its moments!

i'd be curious to hear what kind of anime market this OAV entered in 1986; i suspect its mix of cute girls + mecha + comedy + explosions + decent-budget animation felt considerably more compelling as a package to fans back then.

the torrent came with some really cool extras, including a pristine version of the above Project A-ko Secret File behind-the-scenes type video. i haven't watched it in full yet--it's really neat to see 37-year-old footage that looks so clean--but i did discover these terrible talking-head bits tacked on at the end, where (most of the) anime journos are clearly reading off cue cards and it just keeps getting more awkward. (there's also the matter of how the journos are clearly promoting the then-new movie, which seemed par for the course back then.) anyway, perhaps you too enjoy a little cringe?

on a perilously-close-to-discourse note 😬😬

i'm been biting my tongue this past month but given cohost's fictional character age discourse aka the "rancid vibes" i can't help but wonder how many people here would regard, say, this light-hearted mildly ecchi goof-fest w/ fictional 2D ostensibly 16 y.o. superheros as Illegal Obscenity or worse terms i don't even want to utter.

is so-called "fan service" (not a great term) like Project A-Ko's fair game for feminist critique? it sure is, i welcome that. but if you feel it's reprehensible to watch / enjoy / discuss media of this nature because it somehow harms actual kids?? then please just silently unfollow because damn, you're really stressing me out. 😩

(this is not an invitation to discourse at me, by the way.)

I also watched A-ko recently and found it didn’t really land for me. I wonder if part of its success might have also been its references? If you weren’t in the loop, it could have come across as more original than it actually was, and if you WERE in the loop, it could be the only way of seeing these references or learning about new things. It’s also pretty fun, which probably helped too

oh, you know, i didn't even really read it on a parody level, aside from A-ko's parents being an obv. joke. i wonder.

some of the behind-the-scenes materials do see the filmmakers go into inspirations at least somewhat, i didn't watch them all yet though.

i'm morbidly curious about the sequels now, which have never looked promising.

Yeah, reading about A-ko is really interesting because of where it existed in the anime industry at the time. Lots of references and overlap with contemporary works (that probably would have been more familiar to a Japanese audience). You can kind of dig into any aspect of it and find yourself going down a rabbit hole
