i started playing a recent, highly regarded Symphony of the Night rebalance/difficulty hack, applied over a randomized ROM. the rebalance hack's somewhat confusing documentation seemed to suggest that many people will have pre-randomized the game before applying the rebalance hack, so i did (and also cranked enemy damage 1.5x).

i don't think this is working out, though. 40 minutes in i'm finding weapons that trivialize the supposedly toughened foes, various equippable items have mixed-up descriptions (pointless?), and the Duplicator (the game's ultimate "cheat" item) dropped from a basic mannequin (admittedly funny). just steamrolling everything. i was hoping for a harder game overall, but the random stuff seems to be achieving the opposite.

i don't have much game randomizer experience but the rng feels counterproductive here. maybe i should just apply the rebalance hack to an unaltered ROM.
