like what am i gonna do, play on my desktop LCD? barf

i exaggerate but low-res DOS / Win95 stuff really does look a lot more pleasant and at home on a big old CRT. since i don't have one i might as well just use plain old DOSBox or whatever on my Windows PC + LCD, which feels less alluring.

a funny aspect is that part of the reason i'm attracted to MiSTer for DOS is i kind of want jankier performance than i'd get on my uber-PC. i have legit fondness for how Doom and whatnot used to run imperfectly on a 486, even a Pentium 90. (iirc the MiSTer PC cores are around a 90mHz 486 or thereabouts.) remember when you'd actually see the floppy disk icon in the corner, because the game was visibly loading? or when a more complex scene would cause a drop below 35fps? reminders of just how complex an act this technological marvel of a game was pulling off.

i passed up an opp to get a fantastic e-waste one last week, largely because i don't have spare desk space. may have to work on clearing some.

in reply to @wave's post:

I'm a real crank about Doom specifically. Only Chocolate Doom and Doom Retro understand that doom needs to be pixely, because it makes the enemies feel like part of the enviroment. The sharpness makes the artifice more apparent but in it's natural appearance it's a gorgeous surreal nightmare.

And even games from the 2000s look so much less jank on CRTs.

And yeah, so many of these old games have this rich look that just can't be simulated with the median LCD. I think Apple Retina displays do a pretty good job of looking, if not right, than something more like right, but the median computer monitor isn't that.

oh yeah, Chocolate Doom is a must.

i think literally the only two things i dislike about it are lack of 3D sound (understandable, but i just want it in everything) and the lack of bots (a defunct fork called Strawberry Doom had them and they were handy for quickly testing DM maps). i tried Doom Retro, forget details but it was too fancified for me, lmao.

great point about the assets clashing in high res. exactly what happens. similar to why i don't want to run most console games above native res.
