(this smells very very good)

got my first-ever EverDrive, micro sd all sorted, now just waiting on an s-video cable that's held up by a UK shipping strike of some nature (a good reason for a delay, if there's ever been one).

that's a JP21-wired RGB cable in the box but unfortunately this 1996 console's RGB mod is busted on anything but a powered upscan converter, just total blackness. i'm told it's an easy electronics fix but what i really need out of N64 for my setup now is YPbPr, and in lieu of fixing the mod and adding the complication of an RGB -> YPbPr adapter i'm just stepping down to s-video.

will be the first time i'll ever have used s-video (aka Y/C, Luma/Chroma), i went from composite to RGB back in the day. but i've started to get tired of RGB's unrealistically perfect picture, especially on overly accurate displays (broadcast monitors) and on consoles whose identities were deeply shaped by lower-quality signals (NES and esp. Mega Drive). as such i'm also looking forward to MikeS finishing development of his Y/C cores + hardware for MiSTer.

edit: oh, composite cable was underneath the system. i'll start with that. :) N64 is go!

side note: absolutely wild how large a percentage of console s-video cables are apparently total garbage these days, with issues like massive chroma interference or actually just sending composite(!). hence having to research a good one and then order from abroad.

i just went through similar with Dreamcast; its known-great Japan-only OEM s-video cable goes into triple digits, and only two or so of its third-party ones are said to be solid. so far i ordered a third-party for $30 and it seems to have gotten lost or stolen despite getting a delivery notice, comedy. :)

Nicest thing about the N64 using carts is that you don't need to mod it to play all the games - just an Everdrive! (well, and an expansion pak and memory card...) Also the composite blend on the N64 is quite good and I've seen that the S-Video is not too different from the RGB. The composite works well with the system's blurry anti-aliasing to generate some desired graphics effects, similar to the composite blend of the Genesis and Saturn giving the illusion of transparencies and shadows. The more the system's small texture memory gets gussied up by the video output the better πŸ˜„

Side note - these forever memory cards released this year and do not use a soldered on battery! https://stoneagegamer.com/n64-forever-pak-64-256kb-battery-free-memory-pak-for-nintendo-64.html

fr lol. yeah i just played a bunch of composite and it looks pretty nice, with some exceptions for reds and areas of fine detail. s-video will suit me fine.

for some dumb reason i previously removed the expansion pak from the N64 and also never replaced it with the default "jumper" pak. so then the system wouldn't boot today. luckily i knew exactly where the expansion pack was and that sorted things.

never occurred to me that the controller paks were volatile. thanks for the heads-up! i'll prolly order one of those.

pondering if i should get a rumble pak too. i have a copy of star fox but i don't think i ever had the rumble...
