was when i stumbled upon an MP2 of Perfect Selection Konami Shooting Battle II's remix of Axelay's stage 2 track, "Colony." used to adore this, section at 1:37 was bliss. it's still very good.

this was 1996 maybe? album is from 1995. i remember having the CPU horsepower to decode such files was not guaranteed, they could stutter or use up significant system resources. our family had a Packard Bell Pentium 90 and it did okay with that one. i wonder what player software i used. ha, just remembered the tinny-ass PB multimedia speakers. well, the MP2's quality wasn't much better. this was no "transparent" MP3, it was highly compressed and obviously so.

pretty sure that's the only MP2 i ever stumbled upon; they didn't seem to establish much of a foothold. it was MP3s forever after.
