"progressive metal"

what kind of progressive metal do you like? (or what kind do you listen to?) i'm a big fan of it!

bands i listen to a lot lately

  • Tesseract (Polaris is my fave)
  • Polyphia (Remember That You Will Die is my fave)
  • Between the Buried and Me ("The Parallax II" and "Coma Ecliptic" especially)
  • The Contortionist ("Language" [2015] i am completely obsessed with this album rn)
  • Animals as Leaders (hard to pick a favorite here. i'm shocked that i love this band considering bass guitar is my favorite instrument and they don't have one, but whatever lol)

bands i've liked but don't listen to as much lately

  • Dream Theater (i was obsessed with them for a long time. Metropolis pt.2 is their high point imo)
  • Symphony X (mostly Paradise Lost)
  • Opeth (mostly Watershed)
  • Meshuggah (mostly just Bleed lol)
  • Leprous (mostly Bilateral)
  • Devin Townsend (especially Epicloud & Transcendence)
  • David Maxim Micic (Bilo 3.0 is an incredible album... look up the song "Smile" if you've never heard it. the vocalist is great)
  • Nevermore (god i absolutely adored this band. im still fucked up that Warrel Dane died. Jeff Loomis is a god tier guitarist and songwriter)
  • Coheed and Cambria (ok more like prog rock than prog metal probably, but The Afterman albums are really good imo. i like some of the older stuff too.)
  • Architects ("For Those That Wish To Exist")
  • Mercenary ("The Hours that Remain" especially and "Redefine Me")

bands i'm exploring

  • Haken (i recently bought both Virus & Vector)
  • Caligula's Horse (recently bought "Bloom")

i guess when you play 8 string guitars and play them that fucking well, you can overlook the missing bass a bit more easily. i'm sure there's an alternate reality version of AAL with a bassist that fucking rules, though.
