the thought of any other country beating the US for #1 was previously unthinkable... and spain has absolutely smashed the numbers from the US...

the only clue i had before was one referrer from Xokas

no kidding. i saw an active viewer count of like 20k or something i think? i mean i know wolfey has also featured my site in his videos, but the response was nowhere near this. i don't watch poketubers though so i have no idea about relative popularity levels and stuff.

As someone whose dayjob is web statistics, there's about a 50/50 chance the answer is "shenanigans." Here are some things that could cause this, based on Real Experience:

  • Whoever is generating these reports is wrong about the IP address being located in Spain. IP geolocation is unreliable at the state level but probably not this wrong at the national level. This still suggests a cluster of activity from the same-ish domain, though.
  • There's a VPN endpoint in Spain that people are connecting through?
  • Maybe Google Translate or some other type wrapper services that proxies your site?
  • Your site is being scanned by a bot run from a VM in Spain.

If you have access to day-by-day numbers, see if Spain as a sudden spike, or a wider bump, or jumps up and then remains high. If you have access to finer-grained geo data, see if it's all of Spain or localized to a single city.

Ok that's pretty unusual: it starts increasing on Monday 27 November, and keeps increasing every day after that. Most of the time a single event like "mentioned in a stream" result in a big spike that tapers back down over time, but this bump keeps growing bigger rather than smaller.

Everything looks legitimate. Traffic from multiple provinces, with more traffic from the higher-population ones; distribution of browsers; distribution of time-of-day. Seems to be honest to God word of mouth!

Streamers might have started something, but I'm wondering if there's extra side-channels where people are name-dropping. Must be some place where names don't turn into links since so much of the traffic is from Google. Such as, and I know this is wild, but people talking face to face.

yeah, the fact that it wasn't one big spike is really surprising to me. i wonder... could they be having a regional pokemon VGC tournament or something? could be a good place for a lot of big nerds to start sharing the site in person

i just connected to google search console, in case you wanna see what users are searching for to get here https://plausible.io/pkmn.help/referrers/Google?comparison=off&period=custom&from=2023-11-21&to=2023-12-06&source=Google
