pkmn.help

i just did a pretty big redesign. i made almost everything bigger. back when i did my first big redesign, i went really hard on making everything fit without scrolling on a 1024x768 (iPad) display.

the website has quite a few more features these days, and frankly it just looks cramped! it felt like a remnant of web 1.0 in a way.

also, the cool pokéball themed header was never designed for dark mode, and didn't look as cool there. now i have a dedicated pokéball "logo" (it's a button... press it) which looks a lot nicer imo. it's based on the "premier ball" style, which has a very refined look.

old style for comparison:

a lot of people really like this site and use it soooo much, so it definitely got me a bit nervous doing such a big redesign. i know how angry people can get about redesigns online. i've almost exclusively gotten really positive feedback about the website over the these 11 years, but i still fear complaints about this. that being said, i think this looks really good! i finally squashed all the nasty bold text i was using everywhere. the heaviest weight i use now is medium (500). i added the Roboto font for languages that it covers, falling back to system fonts for everything else. for CJK languages i specifically force the whole page to be in normal (400) weight since bolder fonts tend to be a bit of an accessibility nightmare. a friend told me that the traditional chinese translation was hard to read in some spots before where i was using bold (700) combined with default (16px) font size, and honestly even at medium (400) with 25% larger (20px) text the characters can still be very cramped!
