i have IBS. onion/garlic are massive trigger foods for me. unfortunately, they're in basically everything that tastes good and is savory, including every store bought BBQ sauce. some "gut friendly" brands exist, but their quality isn't always good.

ingredients

  • tomato paste
  • vinegar
  • brown sugar
  • liquid smoke
  • salt
  • pepper
  • cumin
  • paprika

method

  • heat tomato paste and a small amount of water on low in a sauce pan until the water bubbles, then mix thoroughly with a whisk

  • mix brown sugar and water with a fork in a small container to make a paste

  • add brown sugar paste to the tomato sauce and mix

  • add vinegar, liquid smoke, and all seasonings to taste

  • if you added too much water, you can reduce the sauce

  • if you don't like the flavor, you can keep adding more stuff! it's just a sauce

  • pour it directly into your mouth

tips

  • i prefer my BBQ sauce to be sweet and tangy, so i used a lot of brown sugar and vinegar

  • you could skip the liquid smoke, but it's a shortcut to making non-BBQ food taste like BBQ, so i wouldn't recommend it
