i finished a new drawing! it was drawn entirely from life, including the (very much real) fish - i just had to do that part of the drawing very fast in one day to avoid it decomposing on me. the text on the right page is a joke with my partner, who will be receiving this drawing next time i see it!

i initially was not happy with my decision to use color in the fish, but i've come around to it now that i've added color elsewhere. this was my first major work in pen and ink, and i definitely find it more challenging than any other medium - the difficult part was not the text, funnily enough, but the paper itself. i'm not sure how readily i'll reach for pen and ink again, but it's good to have the option available.

How did you render all the text on the newspaper? Was it mostly gibberish, or were you transcribing but with lower fidelity?

It looks really good, and I'm curious how to replicate it in pieces I do in the future!

i drew lines in pencil to follow, then i drew in shorter lines in varied sizes to represent words - one to represent the top of the letters and one for the bottom, so two lines per line of text. then i just put letters in between them. some of it is gibberish, but a lot of it is song lyrics to the songs i was listening to. i would write the words based on the sizes i pre-planned and not the actual words, so the words would run together and be split in the middle, like "cametog ether" instead of "came together." you can see some actual words if you look closely, but the goal was more to get a convincing shape of text than to make anything readable.

and thank you!
