tedious brown gay in the great white north. hey have you ever listened to Autechre

I think that rate your music and similar review sites are good websites for the simple reason it encourages people to form and write out their own aesthetic opinions - even if they're all surface level arguments, even if they are "cringe" because they rely too heavily on comparison to BCNR or whatever. I enjoy seeing teenagers bumbling through bad prose to justify their reasoning for why they like one strokes album more than another. I don't think that that is, like. a negative of these sites. It is a net positive for The Culture that people learn how to write out these thoughts, and that people argue about stupid subgenre miscellanea

this is the age of all sources for independent criticism being shuttered while new full-time Taylor Swift-only positions are announced. there is not enough disagreement in music. rym is a machine for disagreement. a hater generator. It's a muscle you must work. a necessary part of the ecosystem.

If not for a bunch of unlikable pedants who are no fun to have around at parties, all music will be boygenius, forever

rym also very neatly avoids the echo chambers that tend to form on algorithm-driven sites. it's easy enough to find reviews that you wildly disagree with, and even when they're absurd, it prompts ppl to think about why they like or dislike an album, and about things they might not have considered.
