a lot of people not familiar with any indian music bounce off of indian classical music except when viewed as something "ambient" to not pay attention to ("new age" or "world" music marketing tactics, etc). this is impossible for u. srinivas's mandolin, which is jerking you here and there and waking you up at every instant. i tend to show his stuff to people who ask why i like carnatic music so much, because i guess with him the sonic appeal is very immediate - not to downplay the very real cleverness and deep complexity of his improv
i am in india for the chennai december concert season and as always i am trying to find mandolin concerts, and thinking about how i maybe could have seen u. srinivas live when i was younger but i never jumped at any opportunity
