Here as it's on everyone's GOTY lists I keep wondering if I want to play Alan Wake 2. I played the first game three times through when it came out and liked it a lot at the time (I even reviewed it at my old job, though that seems to have been ethered off the internet in various site redesigns.) I did get the remastered version via PS+ and played a bit of the intro before going "actually, I already played this three times and it's pretty corny and clunky in 2023" and stopped. I've played through a good bit of Control and that's a game where as I play it I'm like, do I like this? am I enjoying this? The combat is an absolute slog that I turned down to extremely easy just to get through it. But it doesn't NOT compel me?? So this mix all leaves me very curious about Alan Wake 2. All the praise has me kind of like, really? Her? Which just amps up the curiosity!!

Anyway all this to say that if you'd like to convince me to play Alan Wake 2, this is your opportunity.

I think I gotta check it out for this reason! Since Alan Wake 1's writing was... well, it was by Alan Wake, a corny hack! But I'm hearing that the second game like, recognizes that.

I did start replaying the first game because I wanted to see, wait, did the first game also recognize that Alan Wake is a corny hack, and I was just too in my twenties to realize it? But I guess it doesn't matter. Also I missed his wonderful friend/agent who carried around that standup of him. And Deerfest. Ah heck, Alan Wake! Ya old rascal!!

when I posted roughly the same thing about wanting to play a game that so many people liked so much, a bunch of people jumped in the comments to tell me all the games I had to play first, and so I decided not to

I'm playing right now and I really like it! The combat is nothing to write home about but there is WAY less of it compared to Control and AW1. No avalanches of enemies, usually just a couple at a time. If you play on Story mode they're just minor distractions aside from the boss fights which are also not in every chapter thankfully. Most of the game is exploring and collecting evidence or finding your way through the dreamscape that is the Dark Place.

The atmosphere is soooo good. It's the best part. I love just looking around and soaking it in.
