I have come up with a lot of great plausible deniability reasons to explain this tattoo to the significant number of people in my family who can read Japanese. It's in honor of my nephew turning 18 and getting into a Japanese university (and maybe I'll get a ん when he graduates!) It symbolizes that you always have to start somewhere! It commemorates my 20th anniversary of graduating with a degree in Japanese! It marks my commitment to get good at Japanese again!

Our Pathfinder characters that we've been playing for five years also got engaged the week we got these, so unintentionally, they are our あngagement celebration as well!
