In February, it'll be Zine Month! ZiMo is an exciting time of the year where we (indie creatives) crowdfund zines, particularly ttrpg-related ones. I participated in ZiMo last year with The Station.

You might remember ZineQuest, which was a Kickstarter-run event. I participated with The Sun's Ransom, in 2021. I'm not best equipped to talk about why ZiMo arose to replace ZineQuest, the purpose of this post is to share resources I find helpful. But I bring up this event because some of the resources were designed for ZineQuest.

  • My biggest tip is to use the ZineQuest Break Even Calculator. It has some clever calculation magic, which makes sure your goal allows for you to cover your costs. Don't sell yourself short!
  • It's a bit old at this point, but I think the ZineQuest 2019 data is worth consulting. Zeshio has broken down what can be concluded from the data, and there's useful advice about pricing, costs and factors involved in successful funding. Probably less useful if you aren't funding with Kickstarter. You can find more recent stats (with less summaries) for ZineQuest 4.
  • If you want even more links, Giles Pritchard (Caradoc) has a great zine resources page and has some handy articles on his blog.
  • Finally, I'd recommend joining the ZiMo discord. It's a great place to ask questions and stay updated on what's happening.
