After extensive research into the genre, I have developed the Ultimate Tactics Game UI for our upcoming game Skuddbutt Tactics

[1] "What is the experience we're trying to create" is the first & constant question
[2] To make something seem more like anything, put it next to the opposite (big guy/lil guy, happy thing/sad thing)

That’s pretty great!! Some minor additions to make it even Ultimate-er could be red circles around enemies that change design when targeted, highlighting the ap that you are about to spend on your ap bar, and maybe highlighting the damage you are about to deal on the bottom-left portraits as well
