Unemployed 30-something slinger of too many words. Would happily invite people into my own little worlds if only anybody asked. I own an unwise amount of golf simulators (approaching four shelves now!) and otherwise tinker with retro computers and assorted video game nonsense.

Analogue Pocket works some kind of witchcraft with its absurdly high resolution screen. The little thing is barely 3 inches across, but puts out such a dense dot-pitch that these funky screen filters actually convincingly look like the real thing when in use. Those interested have probably already seen how Pocket handles the likes of Game Boy games; I was largely interested in what the Analogue team had in store for Cartridge Adapter No.4: TurboGrafx 16/PC Engine HuCARDs. And the first HuCARD game I had to hand (that was not golf): THE Kung Fu, known in the West as China Warrior, a fine addition to what Hardcore Gaming 101's Xerxes has dubbed the "you're huge, and you have to dodge stuff" genre.

I busted out my silly clip-on macro lens for these close-ups; these are the screen filters available when playing a HuCARD game on Pocket. I am particularly fond of the PC Engine LT one, though the TurboExpress one is surprisingly nostalgic for something I've literally never used before in my life. It reminds me of those old flip-out panels on late-90s camcorders. I'd never try to play an entire game that way, but maybe it'd add some neat grit to Devil's Crush. (if I ever wind up having a copy of that...then again, that last OS update did enable support for screen filters in OpenFPGA...)

@Siph

these donโ€™t seem to be sold anymore sorry :( They seem to have first released in 2015, but I bought them in 2020. They seemed to be a limited run both times.

If I ever meet Susan Kare IRL Iโ€™ll ask her which card is her favorite and ask her to sign it for me. (I guess it might be the Queen of Hearts since itโ€™s on the front of the deck package?)

I remember seeing that these were on sale but I had a little less cash to spare for it at the time, and I was deeply sad to find more recently they were no longer being sold.

They are indeed very lovely cards, though.

Kare still has a couple designs for sale on Areaware and also sells prints on her own site.

I own these, too! Apart from the pixelated corners being a little bit pokey, and the card-backs not being my favorite (gotta be that robot! c'mon!), they're actually pretty nice and I like to get them out once in a while.

I don't miss Clippy, per se, but I miss the era when helpful little things had faces. Alexa is a faceless void, like a Shit Janet that spies on you. "Hey, Google" is like being in the future without the dignity of saying, "Computer: Tea, Earl Grey, hot." Where's the soul of any of these things? Where's the joy?

Not only is a robot vacuum helpful in keeping my living space clean, he's also a dumb robot I can personify and his fuck ups are very low stakes.

Behold my son Sevenger Jr getting stuck in the cat food tray again!

He's from 1999, runs Quake half-alright, and is named after a mythical Viking longship made from the toenails of the dead. He is also in a state of constant concern.

Well, Naglfar, maybe if you could boot up in less than 5 minutes... ๐Ÿ˜†
