The wonderful 50 Years of Text Games has added a "bonus" article about one of my favorite (and most controversial!) text adventures, "The Gostak."

It's basically The Jabberwocky or Finnegan's Wake as Interactive Fiction; a game that requires you to type in sentences using strange nouns and verbs without knowing what those nouns are or what those verbs do. "Loff" and "Hoff" are opposing directions, but are they north/south, east/west, up/down, or something else entirely? It is meticulously implemented and completely fair, with every response, object description, and even error message giving you a small handhold into this abstract dream world.

This text game doesn't just play with the malleability of language, but beats it with a hammer into another shape entirely. Highly recommended.
