The state of modern comedies bums me out. Thought this would really work for me as I've been on a big 00s teen comedy kick, but left the theater having had exactly zero (0) laughs. Like every comedy now this is primarily a vehicle for improv skits that undercut the handful of jokes that land by having someone interject with something like "wow that's crazy." There are some funny bits sprinkled throughout a deluge of Twitter clap backs, but they're all diffused by how self consciously in-a-comedy everyone is.
The scripted moments work way better, mostly because they rely on physical comedy (they said it couldn't be done). The shockingly brief amount of fight scenes are fine, with the big finale being a highlight of sorts even though it's dramatically clear nobody knows how to choreograph or edit fight scenes (characters are literally obscured as soon as it starts because they're all on the same Z-axis). People literally getting murdered was pretty sick, wish the rest of the film wasn't so tame.
Losing my mind at this being a raunchy comedy when it is profoundly un-horny and all but a few jokes are fully in the respectable Tumblr GIF spectrum. If you're going to rely entirely on witty dialogue it's got to actually be shocking, at least a little scandalous. Not sure how you make a movie that is openly gay and completely disinterested in being hot for women but here we are. D.E.B.S. and But I'm A Cheerleader released almost two decades prior and eclipse any sensuality in this film with their opening montages.
Justice for Hazel, film did her so dirty.
