Several years ago, goonstation coder Keelin was developing their materials system.
This would allow various items to be made from specific materials with their own properties and players could make their own stuff out of it and exploit those same material properties themselves. Neat!
Well, while testing it we added some silly materials alongside the expected metals, glass and such. Keelin asked me to draw a texture for a pizza material. It's great, it's got little pepperonis on it!
Something you get to do in amateur open-source projects that you can't in commercial games is test things like this in a live server environment, in the middle of the round ~80 players are enjoying.
So what we did is we pushed the code and the new assets and hopped online. Then we transmuted every single item in the game world into pizza. Like a greasy philosopher's stone.
There were quite a few unintended effects to everything suddenly being made of pizza, but the most dramatic one was that the pressurised containers of plasma gas were far softer than usual, getting automatically renamed to "soft soft pizza plasma canisters" and leading to massive explosions throughout the engineering department made worse by all the surrounding walls and windows so being made from pizza.
We had to restart the server shortly after.
