The rabbi, getting agitated, continued, "Is it chiding the audience for not being able to picture a truly perfect place without some dark twist to justify it?"
Once more, the old man shook his head and replied, "that is not the meaning of Omelas."
Finally, the rabbi had had enough, he stood and started gesturing angrily, "then what is it!? Nobody can agree, some people read it as a straightforward fable, some as a metatext about fables, some people write counter-stories, and counter-counter-stories, there's endless discourse about the morality of saving the child or if the child even exists-"
The old man interrupted, clapping his hands approvingly, "THAT is the meaning of Omelas!"
