Return to Monkey Island

Been plugging away at this for a couple months and just beat it on Hard mode almost entirely hintless (the final puzzle is objectionable). It's purely trading on nostalgia, of course but it's corrupted nostalgia with a lot of new ideas, so it plays like a remix of Secret of Monkey Island. You get used to the art style very quickly. I never thought it looked bad, but it looks a lot better when animated.

The puzzles are a lot of fun. The interface is very streamlined, but it can still be very tricky. The Terror Island sequence is some of the best stuff in the series.

Achievements turn out to be a good fit for Monkey Island! They guide you to extra jokes and bonus puzzles. It's worth keeping an eye on them to look for cool stuff you can do. I'd like to go for 100% someday.

The ending is very brave. I had to sit with it for a little while but the more I think about it, the more I like it. It's the right way to end the game, given everything that leads up to it. People's mileage will vary.

Taiji

I wanted The Witness with fewer audio logs, and that's what this is. You already know if you'll like it or not. I like it. It's pretty and the puzzle interface is cool.

Not sure it does a great job of textless tutorials, though. Say what you like about The Witness (and there's a lot to say about it), but it's very good at enforcing an understanding of the puzzles. Taiji lets you get pretty far with a few puzzle types on faulty assumptions, so you get clobbered unpleasantly just when you're feeling confident.

Also if you don't like your reward for puzzles to be more puzzles, then, haha, don't play Taiji.

IFComp 2022

Been reviewing some of these competition entries over at @IFRabbit. They're (almost) all great. Go play and rate 5 of them before November 15th and help the IF community out.
