visited the connections museum in seattle today, it's a museum full of working phone switches and communications exhibits from the last century. i had multiple moments of being awed by being able to see how big physical machinery accomplished something i'd normally think of as requiring a computer. it's a really cool place if big old machines even remotely interest you; the tour guides were great so even if you don't know anything about phone systems going in i'd recommend it
