Thinking about how I work with my roughs has made me feel like I wanna steer towards rougher less "perfect" rendering overall - while this piece ("Chroma Shoal" - done for the Ghostfruits "ENEMY" anthology) is still a favourite of mine I think it's easily one of the most egregious examples for me of how some of the energy and even compositional balance of a sketch can be lost in rendering.

sketches & roughs always hold a special place in my heart. i love seeing the transition from sketch to final, especially with color pieces. i'm also trying to learn how to be a little "rougher" with my art because my finals always look so much stiffer than the sketches.

this work of yours is one of my favs in recent memory and i love the roughs too!

It's so tempting to keep rendering when I get to the crucial point lol. It's silly because I think staying rougher would both increase my output over time by cutting down on pointless rendering hours AND make the work itself more vital and dynamic, but I still find myself enjoying the process of whittling and whittling part of image down to a "Perfect" shine too much lol

the detail and variety of textures of your rendering in final works is always cool as hell. it all looks very tactile.

but yeah absolutely there's something satisfying about just adding another layer of shadows/highlights, and then maybe another, okay just one more. my stopping point is too often when i have done everything i can think of, and can no longer Do anything to it. :/

i suppose part of the work of constantly learning and re-learning art is remembering to throw the switch that says "okay this is DONE" lol

oh that's a beautiful rough. i love this kind of loose digital brushwork, it's something i've been trying to practice since watching a speedpaint of yours actually :)
