Gender: All The Youtube Comments Are People Specifying What Drug They're Listening To This On Down To The Dose
Artist: Shpongle
Album: Museum of Consciousness (2013)
Wibbly Notes: I feel dangerously close to violating my "psht, everyone has heard of them" rule but I suspect Shpongle is the kind of phenomenon that is highly localized to its genre– if you listen to this kind of shit someone WILL tell you about Shpongle, but if you mostly listen to other genres how would you ever find out they exist?
Shpongle is described on wikipedia as "psychedelic electronic" as well as "one of the progenitors of psybient". They pull what I will refer to as the Dead Can Dance trick and like to sample a bit from non-Western musical traditions to produce stuff that is nevertheless highly palatable to Western musical tastes. Nowhere near as much as DCD– this is more like 3% instead of 48%– and not the least because they're busy putting out tracks that could get someone drunk at fifty paces. Nevertheless I will point and cheep.
I really prefer this album all together and pretty much only listen to it that way. I need to emphasize how rare that is for me, I'm usually a "one song for 40 hours on loop" kind of listener with most music! I did my best to pick out the most Shpongle track I could to give everyone a fair shot but I neeeeed to point out the track preceding it is titled "How The Jellyfish Jumped Up The Mountain" and I was so tempted to use that one just for the title. Pls observe my self-restraint.
