A lot of people think the defining feature of turtles is the shell, but nay! The defining feature of turtles is the SQUISH: to make up for that central shell being just this side of an exoskeleton, all of a turtle's limbs are obligated to be very bendy, stretchy and squashy.

And this is why we call them turtleneck sweaters: when you need your legs/neck to alternate between "periscope go zwoop" and "scrumch" you will quickly exceed the limits of simple elasticity and arrive at the next option: wrinkles and folding.
