I understand why it happens, but it's still funny when I check the Market Board for this or that crafting material to find that either I can spend 1600 gil teleporting all over creation to gather the materials and then spend catalysts on the subcombines... OR I could buy eighteen for 90 total gil.

Literally.

FFXIV Market Board listings where the cheapest option is 18 star sapphires for 5 gil each, 90 gil total. The expensive option is still only 18 gil unit price.

I've made some bad choices in that vein when I really had nothing else to sell, but for that small a unit price, and in a huge quantity that it's super unlikely to sell...???? It's not worth the brain glucose, vendor it! Or not and let me benefit I guess.

[camera pans to me, stonks georg, throwing jewelry in the chocobo bags to hoard because 9999 gil wasn't enough compared to the shiny 79999 gil item next to it and maybe itll be worth more in a week]

I can explain this (and other ones like it) actually: desynthesis! If there's a decent supply yielded by people desynthesizing gear (which produces crafted/purchased materials, not the raw "needs subcombine still" stuff) but far fewer people buying/using them, you end up with this.

Amusingly, I can report that one of the most common types of items for this to happen to– due to how few recipes use them– are cut gemstones. Real-world value can't save you, sparkly rock, if players only need two of you to finish this entire set of gear....
