Tossing this in an ask because the comments of that post are getting pretty congested -- what datacenter/world do you play on in FFXIV? It'd be cool to be on the same world as you, even if I might not end up enjoying the game. (Also, I get burnt out / bored on games abnormally quickly, so I debated even asking this.)

No problem, if you bail you bail! I'm not around enough to be a really good "buddy" anyways. Luckily the game's population is EXTREMELY newbie-friendly, you could probably get "adopted" just by standing in the middle of a major town asking for a little help. :eggbug-wink:

Anyways, I'm on Crystal (North America) datacenter. My server Balmung is not open to new characters right now– it's one of the biggest-name player roleplay servers, so it's constantly overloading on population and having character creation/transfers closed, lol. But the other servers on Crystal are all very nice and full of wonderful people! Honestly all the datacenters have a pretty good reputation, I've met great folks everywhere, so I don't think you can go wrong.

Note that FFXIV has server travel mechanisms to let you pop your character to any other server on a datacenter really easily! This turns off a few things like retainers, but if your goal is to play with friends this works very well.
For a tiny bit more inconvenience you can also travel to another datacenter in the cluster. For example, Crystal is in the NA region so you could hop to Primal's servers as well, but not Chaos because that's EU region. (Full list of regions/datacenters/servers here.) Datacenter travel turns off a few more things than regular server travel does... stuff which is tied to its datacenter, like chat channels, lol. But if you want to vacation with pals for an afternoon it works great! Tons of player-scheduled events are region-wide these days, everyone just hops datacenters for whatever event.

All of which is to say, my specific server is too congested to roll on, but you've got all the other options and you can temporarily swap later to hang out and do stuff if you want. Good luck, have fun!

ps. instanced content (which is... a LOT of the content in this game) is automatically datacenter-wide and you'll regularly be partied with PUGs from other servers. You can run instances with friends without even having to assemble on the same server, and instances are 98% of what you'll actually want-need those friends for, so the crossplay situation is imo even better than server travel makes it sound. :eggbug-smile-hearts:

I'll also add that right now, there are "recommended" worlds that will give you a VERY hefty exp gaining boost on any characters you make on them. On the NA side, all of those worlds are on the Dynamis data center, which is a very new one.

My overwhelming experience with Dynamis is that it's full of sweethearts and I've enjoyed every visit I've made there - that being said, because those worlds are so new, their activity is VERY low compared to the most established data centers, and you'll often find yourself waiting a long time for instance queues because there just aren't that many people doing things. You can get around it by traveling to another data center, but I thought I'd throw that out there for your knowledge!

I'll second the above comment: Dynamis is nice! The Recommended World EXP boost is nice if you're trying out multiple jobs! Though it's true, the duty queues are a bit slow if you stay put... which kind of feeds into the problem.

But I'll also add an info note that Data Center travel is a little clunky in that you'll need to log out and select your character to move to another Data Center. But traveling within your own to another server is a simple matter of clicking on a Major City's aetheryte and waiting, if that might impact what server sounds appealing. (Example: Balmung might be closed off, but it's a hop away if you're on another Crystal-based server.)
