I award myself ONE (1) Nerd Gold Star for staring at this critter in the dino ARTPG long enough to go "I know this game is otherwise very Dinosauria but... this thing looks like a dog. I'm suspicious" and upon looking it up: yup, Anteosaurus was a non-mammalian synapsid! That's the same family tree as Dimetrodon, which I would describe to the layperson as "imagine a nice big V where one branch is reptiles and one branch is the loooooong path to mammals. Poke the crux of that V. Ok now inch your finger onto the mammal branch and then poke it off a little to the side. You found them! They're so fucknasty old they predate dinosaurs btw."
I still have not found a better way to describe this thing's visuals (scroll to the bottom) to myself than "this is the dog one" though. It is absolute 0% canid... and yet... this is the dog one.
