I doubt many cohost users are currently active on LiveJournal, but that's why password leaks are fun! If you used to have a LiveJournal account, ESPECIALLY if it existed before 2017, please be advised that any passwords used are possibly for sale on the black market and if it was your password between 2014-2017 that "possibly" upgrades to an "almost certainly".
Dreamwidth has a very detailed post up about it, please read it for the full details!1

I think cohost skews towards the demographic that would sooner email their credit card info than reuse a password, but if you know anyone who is or used to be a bit loosey-goosey with passwords: tell your friends, tell your fandom pals!

[1] Quick notes about the parties involved in the news post to get you up to speed:

  • "Who is Dreamwidth?" They are very close to being LiveJournal 2 in terms of site design/purpose, but with the kind of website & social media philosophy that reminds me of the anti software software club. :) I am inclined to believe them when they tell me things, because they tend to be extremely transparent and honest, including about things that don't make them look amazing.
  • "How certain are they that the password leak is real?" Per the linked article, DW admins and a number of helpful users checked the password list against their login credentials on LiveJournal. They found 0 discrepancies across the broadest sample they could get. The Have I Been Pwned guy also did an analysis and concluded it's real.
  • "Yet it says LiveJournal has been denying it??" LiveJournal got bought out by shady assholes a number of years ago and will lie to your face about anything at this point. I would not trust them to watch my penny while I step out of the room, let alone deal maturely with a security breach.
