I love studying cognate languages. My spouse speaks Dutch, so I have been studying it for it! A lot of time there is a good bit of overlap! And there are always funny things that don't always line up. One time I was telling it about one of the books I was reading, about a section where a character was freeing his wife from her suffering. Now, I assumed the verb for "to free" was just "vrijen", a verbal form derived from vrij "free". But umm... vrijen is more like "to have sex with" or "to make love to" (vrijmaken is what I was looking for, and fits a lot better for "Hij maakte haar een harpij om haar van haar lichaam te vrijmaken" than "...om haar van haar lichaam te vrijen")
Similar time to when I forgot "grappig" for funny, and used lustig from German instead (funny, but in Dutch that means lusty), resulting in it giving me a weird and amused look of ??? /lh
