shitposting with the preview display aside (though of course now i've got discord up on there and it's actually kinda nice) i got this C stand in today and out of everything this is the one piece of equipment that makes me feel the most like i'm ready to do a serious video production (which I do intend to do with it)

ACTUAL NEWS CAMERA: huh this thing's just like a Sony handycam but heavy and hard to use

HUGE STAGE LIGHTS: this is not nearly as bright as i imagined. it has a fan, what, really

TELEPROMPTER: please god just scroll down to the next line. why do you always stop scrolling during the outro. please im begging you I just need to get through the next 45 seconds and I can go home. oh my god the tablet wasn't charging and the battery is dead

6K POCKET CINEMA CAMERA: i really wish i had autofocus. this HDMI port is so awkward. wow the battery runtime is less than ten minutes. it has a fan, what, really

C-STAND: i am the key grip on a james cameron production. we are making a Film

i have all of these things except the actual news camera and those have been basically my exact reactions to getting them in. it's almost impressive how much even the lights and 6K camera still have this "ok someone's rich uncle could buy this without any intent to actually use it properly just because someone at the Best Buy managed to sell it to them" feel about them - despite the fact that I'm sure nobody is actually shooting their kids' soccer matches on one, it still feels like it's that kind of gear.

the C-stand though. you cannot buy a C-stand on accident, and the only thing you use one for is to hold things up when you are On Set. as a bonus you really do get a whole $150 worth of steel in one so it has this great industrial feel about it that not even my really nice tripod has. it's the difference between "this tripod / camera / light head / whatever is expensive because we've put a lot of time and effort into making sure it looks and feels perfect" and "this C-stand is expensive because it costs that much to put enough metal in one so that you can beat the absolute shit out of it and still be able to trust it". i'm pretty sure if i counterbalanced the base enough I could hang off the end of the arm and i really wish i had a bit more spare cash because I'd absolutely love to be able to replace all my cheap shit light poles with these

also technically the BMPCCs have autofocus it's just Extremely Bad

in reply to @wolf-apparatus's post:

i love c stands. they are simply a lot of metal, and the cheapest ones available are still just a fucking lot of metal. we've been trained by decades of counterfeiting to believe that anything can be built down to a price, even if that means it flexes under load or breaks after three uses. these can't. if they weren't made of solid steel they would be literally unusable for any purpose

the menace of the consumer market is that people simply can't judge whether things are actually good. they think they can, but they can't. but if someone works with an item, then they can tell, because if it isn't good, then their work doesn't get done. i wish everything was like this. if everything was Needed rather than simply Desired we would not have Amazon products labeled Leewen and Gokhub

what frustrates me about that is that it makes finding good versions of gear that's mostly used by amateurs to be fairly difficult. i've got a couple of those microphone arms that clamp on the desk and one of them cost me $20, and it sucks, and the other one was closer to $100, came from a reputable manufacturer, and it also sucks in ways that are immediately obvious when you attempt to use it for more than three hours a month. i suspect if i ever need to hold a mic up like that again in the future i will go all the way up to the $150 tier and, uh, buy a C stand and put it behind the desk

you end up finding yourself going "god damnit fucking streamers" not because you're mad at streamers, but because they are yet another representative of the most inconvenient set: People Who Commodified Your Interest. every time your Niche Thing gets pushed closer to Mainstream it gets SO MUCH HARDER to find non-sludge results on google. god forbid your job becomes Mainstream
