Sadly it seems like libreSSL support has been pulled from Python which probably kills it for most distros (Gentoo adoption, for example, was never completed) as an openSSL replacement.

Not really sure if the various corporate new-SSL-library-as-a-response-to-heartbleed attempts have had much impact outside of their fiefdoms.

and the website of the Core Infrastructure Initiative, which proposed that if we actually payed the people who maintain critical infrastructure, we'd be better off, seems to be largely abandoned. the contact form has a header telling you not to use it.
