I think I find one of the great advantages of posting your art to a bunch of places instead of just one is perspective. Guess what? It turns out that numbers are mostly arbitrary bullshit! One of the biggest things I've noticed since I've started this is just how wildly different the same art will perform from site to site. I can have a piece pop off on exactly one site and get hardly a murmur on every single other one. Or the exact opposite will happen, and what was otherwise a hit just doesnt take off on one specific platform for some reason. Sometimes you can get a sense for how your audience varies from site to site, but honestly sometimes it's just how the dice fall.
By the way, for all its faults, I've found DeviantART to be pretty far from dead. It's one of the places I've gotten the most exposure from outside my network, and given I didn't have any of my longtime friends on there, I'm pretty surprised with how well I've been able to build up my page from essentially nothing.
So go ahead! Reach outside your bubble with your stuff! Just lob that shit out! imo
