At some point (probably twenty years ago, when I paid closer attention to the IF community), someone went the opposite direction and started building an "adventuring shell," where you looked in directories and could take files elsewhere.

i cannot for the life of me remember what game it was, but years ago i played an IF where entering dir would behave "as expected" - i.e. it would produce a list of file names, largely made-up. attempting to run any of the listed files produced a message like "We were only kidding, you know."
