im not super sure but the the smoke is a bit cooler in a bong and I always get waaaay too high when smoking a bong
by passing the smoke through a water medium the largest particulate gets pulled out of smoke. the finer the bubbles (why you see all the crazy designs) the better the filtration. since most of the larger particulate is ash its smoother and a bit cooler. also you can take much heavier hits bc it acts as an intermediate area and a bit of a multiplying effect. i think.
as someone who has definitely taken a mountain dew bong rip i can say that flavoring the smoke is a thing. root beer was the best of the choices and gatorade was a mistake
