Do you use DuckDuckGo? If so I feel obligated to inform you about

Bangs!

People talk about DDG because it's the 'privacy one', and while I'm sure Google has an equivalent to bangs, I never found it.

So what's the deal? If you enter a search query like !w Dogs, it'll search Wikipedia for 'dogs' and send you directly to the first result. !w in this case is short for 'Wikipedia', but there's thousands of user-submitted ones for all kinds of different sites.

Off the top of my head:

  • !tf2 - The TF2 wiki
  • !i - DuckDuckGo image search
  • !mcwiki - The Minecraft wiki (fuck fandom)
  • !tf2 - The TF2 wiki

The most use I get out of it is as a super simple integration in my discord bot via their api. I can use them directly in discord, so if I wanna pull up a wiki article or something without going to an external browser I can just do it in one message. It's neat! I just submitted a bang for cohost so, hopefully that goes through soon enough.

in reply to @Sciman101's post:

• !gi !bi, google and bing images
• !a amazon search
• !qr turns whatever you put after this into a scannable QR code, I use this to send pages to my phone
• !iqdb reverse image search for 2d images
• !imdb searches movie and actor deets

i've used bangs for so long i don't think i can switch to another search engine ever again. this feature absolutely deserves more attention than it gets
[also typing a bang with no search terms after it usually takes you to the front page of the site, so for example !w by itself takes you to the wikipedia main page]
