as a kid i once wrote a story whose protagonist wore the name "Dawn." when my teacher asked about the story, i used he and him to describe said protagonist. in my head, he didn't even have a gender at all -- i just wasn't familiar with they/them pronouns at the time, being 6 years old. upon hearing this my teacher suggested i might rename him to "Don," as "Dawn" is traditionally a woman's name. i thought that was stupid, and continued to write it as Dawn.
