I'm wrapping up work on a video about Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, specifically the single-player-focused version developed by Ritual Entertainment.

Many of Ritual's level designers got their start in the 90's as bedroom DOOM and Quake mappers. I expect to spend much of tomorrow digging for their levels, but these games aren't really my area of expertise, and I don't even know where to start looking. If anyone knows of good archives/resources for old usermade levels or, by chance, knows these guys' work in particular, I'd appreciate any guidance!

I don't necessarily need the files (though that would be cool!), footage is okay.

Names and handles of people I'm looking for:

Luke Whiteside aka weasl

Russell Meakim aka TheCastle1

Thearrel McKinney Jr aka Kiltron2

Richard Gray aka Levelord3

Todd Rose aka Mr.CleaN

Chris Voss aka kanaeda

  1. Specifically DOOM II and Quake series maps. Was involved with modding teams Artemis Software and WireHead Studios.

  2. Specifically Quake 3 levels and the fansite 'Mean Arena'

  3. GrayDOOM level pack

in reply to @kaceydotme's post:

Regarding Levelord, Doomworld has GrayDOOM and another one of his maps (DM only) https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/g-i/graydoom
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/deathmatch/d-f/dmcoff
Also looking him up on Quaddicted brought up one result
https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/hipside.html
But to be fair, he's probably the most experienced of the bunch as he professionally shipped games as far back as 1996 with Duke Nukem 3D with basically the entirety of Shrapnel City and was one of Ritual's founders and big honchos on SiN 1998

Some of Kiltron's Mean Arena stuff seems to have been archived on Quaddicted's mirror of Planetquake's FTP, seems to be mostly DM maps
https://www.quaddicted.com/files/mirrors/ftp.planetquake.com/meanarena/
Also multiple maps here https://ws.q3df.org/maps/?map=&au=Kiltron
There's also seemingly a reupload of "Unreal Arena" they've been involved with as a part of a larger mod pack, but it'll probably take several days to download that one

Mr.Clean's Q3DM maps seems to be available here https://lvlworld.com/author/Mr.CleaN

Found a couple of Kanaeda's maps
https://www.quaddicted.com/files/mirrors/ftp.planetquake.com/qic/kan_1.zip
https://ws.q3df.org/map/barbecue/
Everything starting with kan_ here

https://www.dukeworld.com/telefragged/fresher/quake3/

Seems like Russell Meakim went by either just "Castle" or "zZCastleZz", a couple of maps available here
https://lvlworld.com/author/Castle
Old website (the only archived page) but the list of maps more or less matches the link above

good finds... many of these folk i remember as being quake2/quake3 era mappers, so you likely won't find much for quake or doom levels from them. this era of the quake community sucks to find stuff from because so much of it was on planetquake, which deleted much of its community files in the mid-2000s

also is should be noted: castle is an awful transphobic MAGA asshat in the modern day

It’s all good. I probably have all the “hey maybe don’t idolize this guy” I need from the web3 bullshit he’s up to now. Probably won’t rake any more mud than that in the interest of keeping on topic

That's really cool to know! I tried to focus more on a pre-Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (2004) work of people mentioned in Kacey's post as I thought that's what was of more interest here because of "bedroom mappers" and "old usermade levels"; NRFTL is more of a professional work I believe? Before commenting I attempted a search by author on Doomworld, but it failed to provide any relevant results, but maybe I was looking in a wrong place? Selected "author" field and all, tried a bunch of different variation of nicknames (not just for Meakim, but for everyone mentioned) but got 0 results

Worked for both "Levelord" and "Richard Gray" though, hence the links.

That one seems even less reliable, for example, despite me selecting just "files", for "Levelord" it found a single result and that was someone mentioning his nickname in a review of a completely unrelated wad from 2018, and of course no relevant results for any of the variations on "thecastle", except 300 different wads featuring "castle" in their title.
