My mother died in May, and even though we told them this, Social Security kept sending us payments. Now, they're trying to get that money back at the worst possible time, and we're in the red about 382 dollars. Can anyone help?

I'm also having to deal with social security repayments, in my case because my disability payments kept coming because of the pandemic even after I went back to work. There's a process where you can submit a form to request that they waive the repayment if you think it's their fault, and in a worst case scenario they will instead let you set up a payment plan instead of giving everything back in a lump sum.

I submitted that form (linked from that page) directly to a local social security office back in June, and while they're still processing it and I may end up on a payment plan once they make a decision, the repayment process was immediately put on hold by the rep I met with. If nothing else this may be a way to give you more time to manage things.
You may already be aware of all this, in which case I apologize for taking up your time, but I know how complicated dealing with the SSA can be, especially if this is your first time handling SS benefits.
