Thank you for putting i to more eloquent words than i ever could what i've been thinking for 8 years.
It's... what you would get from a designer listening to a kid who watched their elder sibling play doom and talkimg excitedly about it.
It feels to me more like a modern Serious Sam. Which also had aspirations of Being Doom in an era when Doom 93 was only beginning to be retro. But i don't think either is a doom 93.
Though i think it's the best serious-sam-like ever made by a country mile.
Yeah, I really don't want to give the impression I think that the game is somehow Ungood.

Oh, absolutely. It's a lot of fun, and has one of the top two silent protagonists who is not a Silent Protagonist.
These days I would probably say these things more about Doom Eternal (which I'm not a huge fan of) than Doom 2016 (which I like a lot).
That and post-Doom 2016, I've sensed a mild hostility in the differences to OG Doom.
