mystery dungeon has truly never been this good. mina has described it as "a beautiful delicious cake you love every second of eating and once its gone you look around and realize you are in a whole cake factory". it is such a huge game, but wants so badly not to overwhelm you all at once with it; something previous shiren games sorely lacked. it does such a fantastic job tricking you into believing you understand the scope of the game, and only wants you to take from it as much as you like.

shiren's back to claim his rightful place at the top of roguelite tower. i was caught so completely by surprise. the core dungeon-crawling gameplay is so solid and great at easing you into its challenge (and offers tons of that good classic hard shit for the realheads who seek it). it is as hardcore as you want it to be, but also with a ton of the quality of life and assistive tools from the chocobo and pokemon mystery dungeons of the world.

the art style grew on me quickly in motion, the writing is shockingly fun and charming for a game with text i expected to just want to mash through, and that music... on top of everything else, the nationalist homophobic sack of shit who wrote the old soundtracks is dead so you can enjoy the entire package with little to no complication!! i love this game!! ahhhhh

im really glad more people are giving the game (and the series) a spin because it's really special to me and just one of my favorite roguelikes because it's so easy to get into but still has all those really funny edge cases deaths and interactions you get from the old crunchy roguelikes. getting turned into an onigiri and stepping on a log trap that knocks you in front of a dragon that instantly kills you because whoops you got grilled is some classic nethack goofiness that i live for.

its soooooo good it is such a back to basics return to form while also perfecting all the extra stuff the games would build onto the formula, that it unveils very strategically. apparently it takes place before 3-5 too! i really think it is worth priority i love it sfm!

Yeah, I feel like this one was kind of a victim of the early year AAA schedule and in particular hitting right between Rebirth and DD2. Obviously it's a bit of an underdog even outside of that...but it's really good. The visuals grew on me quickly too and I appreciate compared to other Shirens I've played for a while that the main dungeon is balanced a bit more around fresh starts.

I need to come back now that there's been some updates, too...I beat Yamakagashi Pass a couple months after release and then took a break because that dungeon took a lot out of me. hahaha

i am just now getting into that one.... it is great because it feels like something you can come back to whenever you are ready for more, and offering a full helping at your return. it feels so primed to be a "forever game" of sorts without any of the negative bloat i associate with that term
