I can't believe I'm saying this but dogs and humans have completely different digestive systems and can safely consume completely different sets of things. Humans can eat onions, but dogs cannot. Dogs can eat all sorts of old raw meats and bacteria and stuff that will make humans incredibly sick because we've evolved to only eat meat that is cooked or very very fresh; whereas dogs have evolved to scavenge in addition to hunting. A lot of dog food includes raw meat or meat that is stored in conditions that render it unfit for human consumption but fine for dogs.

Dog food also contains parts of animals that humans can't eat and vitamins and nutrients that dogs need but which are toxic to humans, like Vitamin K3 and menadione.

Dog food does not follow the same sorts of food safety standards as human food because it doesn't need to be safe for humans to eat, just safe for dogs to eat! Which is a completely different set of criteria!! Dog food recalls do happen... based on if they're safe for dogs, not humans. So if some delicious Italian marinara sauce got mixed in with a batch of dog food, they'd recall it, since they makes it unsafe for dogs. But there are things that would make it worthy of recall were it for humans, but still completely safe for dogs, so it would not be recalled.

The big concession I'll make here is that if you just like, eat a handful of kibble, you'll probably be fine. There's no intentional ingredients in dog food that are like, immediately poisonous to humans. Like a little bit of K3 won't kill you. But if you are regularly eating dog food then that K3 is gonna build up and make you sick.

Likewise, there won't necessarily be bacteria in the dog food that'll give you food poison, but every time you eat dog food you're taking a gamble on getting food poisoning from a, uh, non-ingredient that got into the food, like bacteria, that is safe dogs but not for humans.

Source: I identify as a dog.... So I... I have done... I've done extensive research alright just trust me. Unfortunately, as much as we all would really like to eat kibble, it's not safe to do it as often as we'd like.

i have been staring at this compose box for like ten straight minutes thinking of something, anything, that would summarize the absolute hurricane of reactions i am exhibiting to this post. i've got nothing. no one has anything. do not eat dog food, it is not for you. it is for dog. if you want kibble for people, they have that. put some cocoa puffs in a bowl of cold tap water. it has mostly nutrients and won't give you dog vitamin poisoning.

Gosh, thank you. We've never had dog food or snacks, but we have certainly considered it very heavily. The main thing stopping us other than money is, uh, the animal ingredients (and also dog food seems kinda rough for human teeth).

But we've seen vegan dog treats, with like peanut butter or blueberries, and they genuinely make us drool. It's super nice to know that, they, uh, we should probably avoid them. And just eat like, normal peanut butter and booberries.

......we gotta say that as a group of mostly fellow canines we are very interested in other pieces of research you might want to share x3! We try to lead our life as true to ourselves as possible, and it's always super nice to learn from others stuff we never considered.

I mean just because someone made it for a dog doesn't mean it can't be safe for you I'm just talking about like Dog Food™ you buy in big unrefrigerated bags at the grocery store

remembering the time I got more food poisoned than I've ever been in my life by some ramen a friend decided to make out of frozen dog marrowbones, cause they're just the same bones we'd use to make normal stock but cheaper right
